EXERCISE: A help or Hindrance to Immune Defense?

8/30/12 - - 0 Comments

Many people who exercise claims that they have fewer infections when they are in good aerobic conditions ,few studies have been conducted that can substantiate or refute this claim.  The bulk of the evidence indicates the moderate exercise may have beneficial effects on the immune system, whereas strenuous exercise may be accompanied by reduced immune -system activity.

Moderate exercise training results in an increase in the circulating numbers of granulocytes and lymphocytes and an increase in cytotoxic and natural killer cell acivity. On the other hand maximal exercise suppresses natural killer cells activity one to two hours after exercise. It is possible that intense physical activity induces the stress response, which in turn suppresses immune functions.

Athletes with long, difficult training schedules and intense competition have increased incident of respiratory infection. Because these athletes have lower resting salivary IgA levels compared with control subjects and that their mucosal immunoglobulins are decreased  after prolonged exhaustive exercise.  These levels return to normal after twenty four hours.

It is possible that the athlete who is in training with frequent bouts of exhaustive exercise may have a sustained reduction in mucosal immununity and therefore lower resistance to respiratory infection.

How to Avoid Heart Disease

8/28/12 - - 0 Comments

A healthy diet is a key to healthy heart. If you are obese or having sedentary lifestyle or suffering from diabetes or high blood pressure, then you are at high risk of getting into the grip of coronary heart diseases. Cholesterol is a major cause of all kinds of heart diseases. The risk of heart diseases is directly co-related with bad cholesterol levels in the body. When there is too much of bad cholesterol or LDL building up in the coronary arteries, it gradually forms plaque that can narrow the arteries and hampers the flow of oxygen that is vital to the function of the heart. Such condition is known as atherosclerosis. If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, it can result into a heart attack or heart stroke.

Oats: for healthy heart

Oat is a great food for maintaining a healthy heart life style. Recognizing the benefits of Oats as a healthy heart diet, FDA gave it the status of a "health claim" in 1997. It allowed manufacturers to advertise the health benefits on boxes of oatmeal and other oat products. Few health benefits of Oats for heart have been discussed as follows:

1. Oats bring down LDL (bad cholesterol) without lowering HDL or good cholesterol. Recent studies reveal that everyday consumption of 3gms of soluble oat fiber can lower the total body cholesterol by 8-23 percent and helps to maintain a healthy heart life style. In order to qualify this healing claim, such Oat product must contain at least 0.75 grams of beta-Glucan soluble fiber derived from Oats.

2. Oat contains high level of fiber, manganese, and magnesium which helps to strengthen your heart and prevent it from many heart diseases.

3. Lack of selenium is one of the reasons for coronary heart diseases. Selenium is also used as antioxidants to repair cell damage caused by free radicals. Selenium deficiency can lead to low thyroid function, problems with your immune system and heart problems. Eating Oats regularly can help an adult to meet the recommended 55 mcg daily requirement of selenium and ensure they do not become selenium deficient.

4. Oats also contains unique antioxidants called Avenanthramides that help protect artery walls from the build-up of plaque.

In order to increase intake of Oat in your meals, you can take Oat meals with nuts or fresh fruits as breakfast or can also add Oat flour, when you make breads and muffins. With enormous healthy heart benefits, Oats can be truly called as a miraculous meal for heart.

Pencil Sales Increase 700%

Pencil sales increased 700% in the year following Sudoku becoming popular.

While one might think the pencil, invented by Hymen Lipman, has been seeing less frequent use since the invention of the pen decades ago, it seems Sudoku proved otherwise. Though the pencil was invented a mere 150 years ago (when it was protested by many school teachers because it “encouraged careless thinking”), it’s been the quintessential writing tool for any classroom.

Sudoku, as you likely know, is a logic based number puzzle. The objective of Sudoku is to fill a 9 by 9 grid with the numbers 1 through 9 so that all 9 columns, rows, and 3 by 3 squares have the numbers 1 through 9. Though the puzzle was popular internationally in 2005, it had first become popular in Japan some 20 years earlier.

Back in 2008, The Independent of London reported a 700 percent increase in pencil sales for the year of 2006, during the height of the Sudoku craze. If you’re in the mood to try out one of the 5,472,730,538 Sudoku puzzles, you can visit this website here: http://www.websudoku.com/

Fact: The Oldest Natural Mummy

8/2/12 - - 0 Comments

This naturally preserved mummy lived in about 3,300 B.C. The mummy was found in September 1991 along the border of Austria and Italy. It was found near the Similaun mountain in the Otzal Alps. The mummy was named after the Otzal Alps, and is called Otzi the Iceman. It also goes by the names Similaun Man and Man from Hauslabjoch.

The most interesting characteristic about this mummy was the tattoos on its mummified skin. Each of these tattoos was made of carbon. The mummy has short vertical lines along his spine and also a cruciform behind his knee. He also has several marks on his ankles. Underneath the tattoos was obvious bone degeneration and osteoporosis.

This led some experts to theorize that the tattoos were some ancient pain treatment similar to the modern concept of acupuncture. Apparently, the poor guy didn’t just have pain from the issues in his bones.

He also had a parasite known as whipworm in his intestines. By examining his fingernails, scientists also found out that he had been sick three times in six months before he died.
